Mike Smith is the main character in His Robot Wife and His Robot Girlfriend. He is Patience’s husband. Of course he is in Patience is a Virtue. It wouldn’t be a story without him. I think much of the charm of the story is in Mike’s relationship with Patience. Of course most if not all of Patience’s motivations in the first two stories was her devotion to Mike.
In this book, Mike is less central to the story, because it belongs much more to the robot. Of course he is still there just as much as before and most of the best dialog at least in my opinion, belongs to him.
Mike goes through some medical problems in this book that mirror my own– specifically he tears the cartilage out of his knee just as I did. This only makes sense, since of all my characters, Mike is the closest to me.
If His Robot Girlfriend were to ever be made into a movie, I think Robin William would be perfect for the role of Mike.
Sorry, I read your comment when you first posted it a month ago, and was going to respond. Then I forgot– it’s probably an “age thing.” I wouldn’t have thought of Robin Williams for the part. I don’t think of Mike as being overly expressive. On the other hand, now that I think about it, I can see it– especially in regards to Mike’s sense of humor.
I’m always trying to tell my “non-reader” students how much better the book is than the movie. We can have our own Sherlock Holmes or Hermione Granger or Dejah Thoris right there in our brains. Thanks for sharing your Mike.
What about Jeff Bridges? Mike could be this TRON/Lebowski type guy
I could see that. Jeff Bridges is such a great actor that he could probably pull just about any role off, but yes, I could see him as Mike.
