His Robot Girlfriend mentioned on TeleRead

TeleRead, the blog for and about ebooks and ebook readers recently mentioned the top five most popular free ebooks. Of course, His Robot Girlfriend made the list. See the original post here.

His Robot Girlfriend – 16,000 Downloads!

Today His Robot Girlfriend reached 16,000 downloads! It is available at Feedbooks.com, Smashwords.com, Manybooks.com, and Obooko.com. You can also find it at Barnes and Noble.com and soon at the Sony Reader store.

Featured Ebook – Carmilla

I mentioned previously that I thought Carmilla was the best vampire book of all time. In 2010, it’s going to be a new movie. You can download the free ebook here.

“Carmilla” is a Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. First published in 1872, it tells the story of a young woman’s susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla. “Carmilla” predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula by 25 years and has been adapted many times for cinema.

Senta and the Steel Dragon – Illustration

Ssissiatok fell in line behind Tissonisuk, an older male she knew from the village. Unlike most of the others, Tissonisuk was not hunkering down to make himself look smaller for the softskins. He was standing up at his full six foot seven height. The line moved forward until Tissonisuk reached the table with the softskin seated behind it.

Eaglethorpe Buxton and the Sorceress – Chapter 7 Excerpt

“How are you feeling?” asked Ellwood.

“Better,” said I. “I am a bit bothered by our conversation of yesterday.”

“You were out of your head yesterday,” said he. “Anything you remember me saying is no doubt a result of your overactive imagination mixed with delirium.”

“You think so?”

“It was probably all a dream.”

“If it was, then it was a manly dream,” said I.

“No doubt.”

“That’s the only type of dream that I have.”

“That’s very strange,” said he. “That’s true of me also. I have nothing but manly dreams—dreams with lots of killing and mayhem. Sometimes there is bloodlust.”

“And beautiful women?” I asked.

“Yes. Oh, yes. Many beautiful woman, um… running around. Sometimes they are nude.”

“Sometimes?”

“Almost all the time… all the time. They are always running around nude… with their navels and what-not showing.”

“Me too,” said I. “I really like women.”

“I do too,” said Ellwood. “Some of my best friends are women.”

“Friends?”

“No, not friends. Acquaintances… um, companions? Conquests! That’s what they are. They are conquests. Dozens of women. Scores! Hundreds! And all of them, running around and all of them beautiful, and not the least bit intelligent or accomplished in any way.”

“That makes me feel better,” said I, stopping to pull out something that was stuck in my teeth and turned out to be the wing of a fly.

“Good,” said he, setting in my lap a tray, which I had here to for not noticed. “I brought you some breakfast.”

Princess of Amathar Names

Princess of Amathar has only one human character. All the rest are aliens of one type or another. One alien character is Malagor. He is a rather wolf-like fellow and the name just seemed to fit. For the Amatharians, I created long complex names that would look good, but would be difficult to pronounce aloud. I wanted them to sound vaguely french, because my main character had described their language as sounding that way. So my Amatharians became Norar Remontar, Vena Remontar, and the title character Noriandara Remontar. For the only human, my main character, I needed a name that implied heroic exploits and also to fit in with a plot twist, it needed to begin with the letter A. Alexander was a natural fit, though I don’t remember if I decided upon this before or after I wrote a major college paper on Alexander the Great. For a long time he didn’t have a last name, but I finally named him after a young lady I was working with (as I worked my way through college) whose last name was Ashton. So Alexander Ashton was born.

All New Reader Store

Friday December 11th, Sony and Borders reopened their ebook store, now dubbed the reader store. It has pretty much the same features that it had before, plus new lower prices on best sellers. Best of all, Sony has gone with the Epub book format. This brings us one step closer to having a universal ebook format. Now if only Amazon would get the Kindle on board. It would be great to buy books wherever you wanted, rather than being tied to a single site based on your hardware. We went through the same thing in the early days of computers. You used to have ten different versions of each program for all the computer types out there.

Re-editing His Robot Girlfriend

I am hard at work on the re-edit of His Robot Girlfriend. Thanks to Andy Berdan who sent me a list of corrections to be made. I’ve found a few more and I’m only through chapter three. As soon as I’m done, I’ll be updating those files at all the downloading sites as well as sending a new copy of the manuscript to Lulu for those purchasing the paperback or hardback.

History Card – Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson
1743-1826
Best known today as America’s third president and the man responsible for the Louisiana Purchase, not to mention having his face on the nickle, Jefferson is even more important as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence.

Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0: Brechalon

As I write this (SundayDec. 6th at 4PM) I have just finished the first draft of Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0: Brechalon. I am going to put it aside for a bit before I try to do a revision. That way it won’t be so easy to skip over things that need to be changed. My planned publication date is February 3, 2010.
Next up: a re-edit of His Robot Girlfriend.
