Patience is a Virtue: Harriet

His Robot Wife: Patience is a Virtue

Mike’s daughter Harriet has a much larger role in this story than she did in the previous two.  She was really just a background character in the first two books, so I’m enjoying fleshing her out now.  She’s become a real girlfriend for Patience, as well as a mom in her own right now.

Originally Mike had two kids, a daughter and a son, because I had two kids, a daughter and a son.  And while initially I did pattern a few traits after my own daughter, Harriet really bears little resemblance to her now.  Despite that, my daughter still refers to Harriet as “her character.”  I think this has less to do with the two of them being alike, and much more with the fact that I am very much like Mike.

When I first wrote His Robot Girlfriend, my idea was that there had been a resurgence in old-fashioned names, so Mike’s kids and the kids in his classroom would reflect that.  Later I made a few changes and additions, some of which didn’t hold with that idea.  Specifically, I changed the name of Mike’s son for some reason to Lucas, and I added a couple of other characters.

Patience is a Virtue: Mike

His Robot Wife: Patience is a Virtue

Mike Smith is the main character in His Robot Wife and His Robot Girlfriend.  He is Patience’s husband.  Of course he is in Patience is a Virtue.  It wouldn’t be a story without him.  I think much of the charm of the story is in Mike’s relationship with Patience.  Of course most if not all of Patience’s motivations in the first two stories was her devotion to Mike.

In this book, Mike is less central to the story, because it belongs much more to the robot.  Of course he is still there just as much as before and most of the best dialog at least in my opinion, belongs to him.

Mike goes through some medical problems in this book that mirror my own– specifically he tears the cartilage out of his knee just as I did.  This only makes sense, since of all my characters, Mike is the  closest to me.

His Robot Wife: Patience is a Virtue

As I mentioned yesterday, the new story is told much more from Patience’s point of view.  Patience is a Daffodil Amonte model robot and as such, can do quite a few things that human beings cannot.  Telling the story from her point of view gives me the chance to show what’s going on inside of her a bit.  For instance, she can carry on a phone conversation completely in her head, without verbally having to speak the words.  So, she can carry on a conversation with a person in front of her at the same time that she carries on a conversation with someone on the phone, and theoretically could be doing web searches and other actives while doing so.  In this story, Patience gets a little threatening– not physically, but she can after all, mess with your bank accounts, credit rating, and public records, all the while talking to you.  We also get to see a little more of why she does what she does.  For instance, she lets Mike get hurt if she thinks that saving him all the time would damage his self image.  And she bases her decision on which store to patronize based on whether the clerks are Daffodils or Gizmo robots.

Astrid Maxxim: The Maxxim Family

Astrid Maxxim CoverAstrid’s grandfather was the founder of Maxxim Industries and the Maxxim Campus.  I haven’t actually given him a name yet, but I like Ralph Maxxim.  He and his wife had three children– Roger and Carl, who are a year apart, and then 17 years later, Penelope.

Roger married Kate and it was they who inherited the company and became Astrid’s parents.

Carl married Loren, whom his parents apparently never warmed to, and they had Gloria.  Though Carl and Loren were amply taken care of in his father’s will, he and Loren were unhappy that they were “cut out” of the company.  So they used the majority of their inheritance to puchase Maxxim stock– enough that they both have seats on the board.

Penelope is unmarried.  Like her brothers, she is a genius.  She has her own fortune and a large block of Maxxim stock (more than Carl, but only half as much as Roger).  However, still young and carefree, she spends most of her time jetting around to clubs and parties around the world.

Astrid Maxxim: Gloria Maxxim

Astrid Maxxim 2There are a few other characters that I haven’t talked about in Astrid Maxxim.

Gloria Maxxim is Astrid’s Cousin.  She made a brief appearance in book 1, and was a bit more prominant in book 2, but we can expect to see her more and more.

Gloria is in many ways the polar opposite of Astrid.  Gloria cares nothing for intellectual pursuits and dreams of being a model.  She thinks of her brainy cousin as nothing but a nerd, and isn’t afraid to say so.  Gloria is vain and pretty obnoxious, so she makes a great foil for Astrid, and since they are related, Astrid can’t really get away from her completely.  Though Gloria’s family lives in Socketburg, in book 2 she transfers for part of the year to Rachel Carson High.

Astrid Maxxim: Valerie Diaz

Next Up: Astrid Maxxim and her Amazing HoverbikeValerie Diaz is one of the two Valeries in Astrid Maxxim, and therefore supplies one of the running gags.  Valerie is a shy, pretty girl who has strict parents.  Her father is head of Maxxim Industries Security and her mother is one of the few women in the story who are housewives.

I enjoy writing Valerie’s mother, who is one of the few people in the series who doesn’t think that Astrid is perfect.  Like the parents of all the other kids, I plan to flesh her out a little more with each book.

Astrid Maxxim: Christopher Harris

Astrid Maxxim 2Christopher Harris is one of the six (or seven) main characters in Astrid Maxxim.  Christopher, who doesn’t like to be called Chris is Astrids friend, but also competitor in most things.  They rank about the same in fencing class, have many of the same academic classes and compete for the highest GPA among the freshmen at Rachel Carson High School.

I knew I wanted one of my main characters to be African American, and I didn’t want him to be stereotypically good at sports.  I’ve had plenty of students with black skin who are very smart and are almost as bad at sports as I am.  There are little bits of them all in Christopher and hopefully others will be able to identify with him too.

Astrid Maxxim: Toby Bundersmith

I usually enjoy creating characters that have some major flaw in their personalities.  In fact my favorite characters are those who are seriously twisted in some way.  For one character in Astrid Maxxim, I went a completely different way.

In the Tom Swift books I read as a kid, my favorite character was Tom’s best friend Bud Barclay.  Bud was totally reliable and faithful, completely unwavering in his friendship and belief in Tom.  I patterned Toby Bundersmith after Bud in that respect.

Of course Toby has to be different in one way– he’s not just Astrid’s best friend– he’s her boyfriend.  In fact, she often daydreams of one day being Dr. Astrid Bundersmith, so he has to not only be great, but dreamy as well.  Toby is my perfect boy.  He never wavers, he’s always supportive, he’s always reliable, and always responsible.  He can’t save the day, because Astrid is the hero of the story, but he’s always there to back her up.  If someone has to come to Astrid’s aid, it will be Toby.  In truth, he’s pretty boring.  Fortunately, there are enough other characters who can cause chaos, doubt, and trouble for our girl inventor.

Astrid Maxxim: Main Characters

When I planned out the characters for Astrid, I knew I wanted a group of core friends.  I also like threes, so I planned the characters in triads.

Astrid has two femaile friends at the start of the story– Valerie and Denise.  So Astrid, Valerie, and Denise form a triad.  Then Astrid has a boyfriend, Toby.  Toby’s best friend is Christopher.  Christopher is also super smart and competes with Astrid at school.  So Astrid Toby and Christoper for a triad.  Austin is the new kid in school and forms the third boy in the group– making a Toby, Christopher, Austin triad.

In addition, each of the characters relate to each other in different ways.  Austin has a special connection to Denise and especially Valerie, who are his first female friends.  Astrid and Toby both take Austin under their wings, in different ways.  And there is the second Valerie, which adds a whole ‘nother layer to the Astrid-Valerie relationship.
