Featured eBook – King’s Property (Queen of the Orcs)

King's Property (Queen of the Orcs #1)

I just finished reading all three books in this series.  I read them as ebooks on my iPad, natch.  The three books by Morgan Howell are King’s Property, Clan Daughter, and Royal Destiny.  Howell creates a relatively simple but interesting alternate fantasy setting where orcs aren’t the dirty brutes we’ve come to expect.  The story was somewhat dirivitive– that’s not necessarily a criticism.  If you enjoyed Clan of the Cave Bear, you’ll like this one.  The story was predictable but engaging, and though there were few deviations from what I expected to happen, the characters were very interesting and well-written.  The fantasy setting, including history and language, was well worked out.  There was relatively little magic for a fantasy story– also not necessarily a criticism, and I found the magic the least interesting part of the story anyway.  If you enjoy fantasy– particularly romantic fantasy, read this series.

Featured eBook: King Solomon’s Mines

King Solomon's Mines (Penguin Classics)

King Solomon’s Mines by H. Rider Haggard tells the adventure tale of Allen Quatermain’s adventures through Africa in search of the titled ruins.  There have been several movies of it, all fairly cheesy, although on did feature Sharon Stone.  You can download the ebook free from several sites including Feedbooks.com.

Featured ebook: She

She by H. Rider Haggard
I have just started reading this book myself, so I don’t yet know how it’s going to turn out, but I already like the tone and the writing. Haggard is the inventor of Allan Quatermain of King Solomon’s Mines and the author of eighty pulp adventure novels. Since I started reading this as I am writing my newest book, I made two of the characters H. Rider Haggard fans.

There’s also a movie of it.

Featured eBook: The Return of the Mucker

Billy Byrne, the Mucker returns, this time to adventure in the southwest, as he tries to rescue the girl of his dreams in another almost forgotten work of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It’s been a long time since I read this one, so I think I’m going to put it in my “to be read” stack again. You can download it in ebook form from Manybooks.net by clicking here.

Featured eBook: The Mucker

A street tough, bully, and thug is shanghaied onto a ship’s crew bound for the south Pacific, only to face shipwreck, jungle dangers, and the denizens of a lost world. Pretty typical stuff for an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. This almost forgotten work by the author of Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars is well worth the read. You can download it free at Feedbooks.com. Follow this link.
