The Voyage of the Minotaur“Hello beautiful ladies,” said an accented voice from the east side of the stream.

Senta and Zurfina both looked up to see Suvir Kesi standing beneath a large pine. He wore his usual bright blue clothes and yellow fez with a blue tassel on top. He held his right hand straight out and dangled an 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet of paper.

“Uuthanum,” he said, and the paper burst in flame from the bottom, burning upwards as if it had been soaked in lamp oil.

“What the hell was that supposed to be?” asked the sorceress.

“A bit of mathematics,” Kesi giggled. “A result of the mechanism, you might say.”

“Silly thing to die over,” said Zurfina, “Uuthanum.”

She pointed to him with her right index finger, but nothing happened.

“Uuthanum uluchaiia uluthiuth!” shouted Kesi, raising both hands, and pressing them together, palms up.

A sphere of flame formed as he pulled his palms apart. Only two inches across, it surged and swirled there for a second, then shot toward the sorceress. In the thirty feet or so between the two of them, the ball of flame grew until when it hit Zurfina, it was six feet across. It exploded into a huge flash, knocking Senta away and into the water. When she looked back, she saw Zurfina completely on fire, her clothing and even her hair in flames. She too fell into the water, in a cloud of steam and smoke. Kesi let out another shrill laugh.

Senta couldn’t believe it, but Zurfina climbed back to her feet. Most of the black leather pants and leather corset she was wearing were gone, as was most of her blond hair. Her skin was scorched and when she moved, it cracked hideously. She pointed her finger again at Kesi.

“Uuthanum uastus corakathum paj,” she hissed. Again nothing happened.

“Bechnoth uuthanum pestor paj,” said Kesi, stretching out his hand.

A cone of cold, like the simple spell that Senta had learned her first day with Zurfina, but much larger and more powerful sprang from the wizard’s hand. The frosty air cut through the space between the two spellcasters, centering on Zurfina. In seconds, frost formed to cover her entire body, even freezing the stream for ten feet or more around her.

Senta let out a shriek and ran for the protection of the nearest tree on the opposite side of the river from where Kesi stood. She ducked behind a redwood three feet in diameter and dropped to her knees.

“Don’t go far!” called Kesi. “I have something I need to show you!”

It wasn’t the wizard, but a crashing sound that made Senta look around the tree. Just as she had suspected, Zurfina had broken out of the icy prison, melting the frost on her body and the ice in the stream. Senta had always thought that Zurfina could not be harmed by magic, but now the sorceress looked very unsteady. She reached up and snatched something out of the air near her face and threw the invisible object at Suvir Kesi. Whatever it was must have hit near him, because from out of the ground around his feet sprang a dozen black tentacles, each more than ten feet long. They immediately began grappling with the man. Zurfina dropped backwards into a sitting position in the chilly water.

Senta watched as Kesi pulled out a large curved dagger and began to hack at the tentacles, which wrapped themselves around his legs, arms, and neck. There was a real look of panic in his face, but after a moment, he began cutting more of the slippery black tentacles than grew to replace the ones lost. A look of triumph came over him and he slashed with renewed vigor until the last of the squiggly conjurations were gone. Throughout it all, Zurfina sat unmoving, the six-inch deep water flowing around her.

“Nothing to say?” asked Kesi, looking down at the sorceress. “Power all gone? I don’t think so. You still look a little feisty to me.”

“Uuthanum rechthinov uluchaiia,” he said.

Even as he did so, the sorceress grabbed another of the glamours floating around her head and threw it. It looked as though it took all her energy to do so. A bolt of lightning shot from Kesi’s hand directly at her. But a misty form, shaped like the spectral hand of some ghostly giant appeared out of nowhere, palm raised up like that of a police constable directing traffic, and the lightning bolt ricocheted away at a sharp angle.

“That was it, wasn’t it?” said the wizard. “Now you’re done. Thank goodness for that mechanical contraption. Without it, I never would have been able to formulate a spell powerful enough to counter magic that, well let’s be honest, is normally greater than mine by a factor of four.”

Brechalon – Excerpt

BrechalonZurfina had her ticket on the B511 out of Brech to Flander on the southern coast, where she had already arranged to meet a boat that would take her to a ship bound for Mirsanna. There was no way that she could stay in Brechalon any longer. The government had refused to accept her independence. They would have her join the military or they would see her destroyed. They had already sent a dozen wizards and two sorcerers against her. But Zurfina was the greatest practitioner of sorcery in the Kingdom and was more than a match for any wizard.

A man in a brown suit stepped out from behind a pillar. To the other people in the station, he seemed nothing out of the ordinary, but to Zurfina he glowed bright yellow and was surrounded by a sparkling halo. She didn’t wait for him to cast a spell. She pointed her hand toward him and spat out an incantation.

“Intior uuthanum err.”

Immediately the man doubled over, wracked with uncontrollable cackling laughter. But before Zurfina could smile appreciatively, she was thrown from her feet as the world around her exploded in flames. She had been hit in the back by a fireball, and only the fact that she had previously shielded herself prevented her from becoming a human candle, as four or five innocent bystanders around her now did. Rolling to her feet and turning around, she found that she faced not one, but four wizards. The one who had evidently cast the fireball was preparing another spell, while the other three were casting their own. Her shield protected her from the lightning bolt, and the attempt to charm her, but one of the four magic missiles hit her, burning her shoulder as though it had been dipped in lava.

“Uuthanum uastus corakathum paj—Prestus Uuthanum.” Zurfina ducked into a side alcove as one of the wizards turned to stone and her own shield was replenished. Several more magical bolts struck the stone wall across from her, creating small burnt holes. Peering quickly around the corner, she saw the four wizards just where she left them, the three trying to use their petrified comrade as cover. Looking in the other direction, she saw that the wizard cursed with laughter had recovered and he had been joined by two more.

Seven wizards—well, six. That was a lot of magical firepower. But then Zurfina looked across the station platform. Directly opposite her was the open door of a train; not the B511, but a train bound for somewhere else. If she could reach it, she could get away. She glanced quickly around the corner again. The smell of burnt bodies mixed with thick black smoke in the air, but though there was plenty of the former, there was not enough of the latter for Zurfina’s taste.

“Uuthanum,” she said, and a thick fog began to fill the station platform.

“Maiius uuthanum nejor paj.” The three wizards to her right suddenly faced a dog the size of a draft horse, snarling and foaming at the mouth, and they felt their spells were better aimed at it than any blond sorceress.

Turning to her left, Zurfina cast another spell. “Uuthanum uastus carakathum nit.”

The cement that formed the other end of the platform turned to mud. The petrified wizard, deprived of his secure foundation toppled over onto one of his comrades, crushing him, while the other two struggled to pull themselves from the muck. Zurfina shot out of the alcove and ran toward the train. She had almost made it, when Wizard Bassington stepped into the open doorway in front of her.

She stopped right there in the open, unbalanced, unsure now whether to run left or right or back the way that she had come. She felt uncomfortably like an animal caught on the road in the headlamps of an oncoming steam carriage. Bassington didn’t move. He stared at her with his beady eyes. His eyes went wide though when Zurfina reached up to snatch something out of the air. Normal, non-magical people couldn’t see them, but he could—the glamours that orbited her head were spells cast earlier, awaiting the moment when she needed them.

She crushed the glamour and pointed her hand at the spot where Bassington stood, just as he dived away. The entryway where the wizard had been, and the passenger coaches on either side of him exploded, lifting much of the train up off the track as metal and wood shrapnel and human body parts flew in every direction. The flash knocked Zurfina herself back onto the cement and sent her sliding across the pavement and into the far wall. Before she could get up, she was hit with a dozen bolts of magical fire, some but not all of them deflected by her magic shield. It was a spell of weakening, followed by one of sleep though that finally dropped her head unconscious to the ground. The last thing she saw was Bassington’s hobnail boots walking toward her.

Senta and the Steel Dragon – Magic Battles

One of my favorite parts of Senta and the Steel Dragon are the magic battles. There are many situations when magic is used against someone not magical, but battles between magic users are particularly cool.

Spoiler Alert: I’m not trying to give any spoilers, but there might be some, so be warned.

Book 0: Brechalon

In Brechalon, there is an actual magic battle between the sorceress Zurfina and no less than five wizards. Since Zurfina starts the series as the most powerful magic wielder in the world, you can imagine that this would be a pretty good fight.

Book 1: The Voyage of the Minotaur

In this book, Zurfina has a duel with Wizard Suvir Kesi. He ambushes her with a mechanically produced spell that zaps her magic away before he starts, but then he perhaps doesn’t know that she has spells stored that she doesn’t need additional magic to activate. The biggest use of magic in the book though happens elsewhere.

Book 2: The Dark and Forbidding Land

Sorceress’s apprentice Senta has a duel with washed out wizard-in-training Streck. Since neither of them is particularly powerful, this is a fairly light-hearted contest.

Book 3: The Drache Girl

In this book Senta has her second magic duel, this time with Master Wizard Bassington. Though she has gained a great deal of power since the previous book, it’s a big difference between facing a failed apprentice and a fully-powered wizard. This is one of my favorites though.

Book 4: The Young Sorceress

There are a couple of notable magic battles in this book. The biggest is Senta and a group of Brech wizards against a group of Freedonian wizards backed by riflemen. My favorite though is Senta versus a Lizzie witch doctor.

Book 5: The Two Dragons

Again, there are a couple of magic vs. magic battles in this book, and again, they aren’t the biggest uses of magic. There is Zurfina vs. a dragon. Then there’s Senta, a dragon, and a wizard versus a dragon– what do you know, two dragons! My favorite magic duel in this book though is Senta facing off against three Freedonian Journeyman Wizards and a Lizzie Witch Doctor.

Book 6: The Sorceress and her Lovers

There is probably less magic fighting in this book than the last two.  Still, there is one battle involving the sorceress, four wizards, and a couple of non-magical types with guns.

Book 7: The Price of Magic

This has more magic than any of the previous books, not surprising since Magic is in the title.  Senta has to face off against a whole group of lizzie shamen.  There’s a LOT of other magic tossed around, causing a great deal of destruction.

Motivations: Astrid Maxxim and the Electric Racecar Challenge

Astrid Maxxim and the Electric Racecar ChallengeI had planned for the fifth Astrid Maxxim book to be the Electric Racecar Challenge all along, and had built up to it in the previous books.  As I was writing Astrid Maxxim and her Hypersonic Space Plane, I came across an article about a woman who had suffered amnesia in an auto accident.  I decided that it was how I wanted to start the next Astrid book.  It would be quite a shocker opening.

I wrote the first two chapters and then got sidetracked writing His Robot Girlfriend: Charity.  I got back to Astrid and then got sidetracked again, first writing a few new chapters of Kanana the Jungle Girl and then writing the entirety of The Price of Magic.  At that point, I looked back at the Astrid book, which was about half done, and thought “get to it!”

Even after all that, I ended up with everything but the last chapter done and got stuck.  I don’t really know why.  I knew what I wanted to write.

One little thing I’ve been playing with is that each last chapter of an Astrid book is named for a Shakespearean play.  I was stuck with this book until I suddenly realized that I could name the rival race car the Cheetah Tempest.  There you go!

Motivations: The Price of Magic

The Price of Magic - NewThe Price of Magic, Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 7, was set up in book 6.  Reading through them, they really feel like parts one and two of a story arc, although that wasn’t quite the way I planned it.  I wanted it to be a bit more open-ended.

The Price of Magic was much easier to write than The Sorceress and her Lovers.  It’s probably the longest book that I’ve written straight through without stopping.  I had just finished His Robot Girlfriend: Charity and started in on Astrid Maxxim and the Electric Racecar Challenge, stopped that and wrote a bit on Kanana the Jungle Girl.  Finally, I set all that aside and jumped back into Birmisia and Senta, and it seemed like that was what I was meant to be writing.

Perhaps what made it so much fun to write was that I was dealing with Iolana Dechantagne Staff as a fourteen-year-old.  I seem to be making a career of writing about teen girls– between Senta in The Drache Girl and Astrid Maxxim.  In any case, I really enjoyed writing Iolana’s portions of the book as well as Tokkenoht’s.  She had not been one of the primary characters up until this point.

When I finished, the pieces of the next book just fell into place.  I sat down and wrote out a very complete outline for it.  I’m kind of itching to get started on it.  As usual, this story will follow five characters, two of them we know, but have not seen the world from their point of view before.  Another has been a primary character, but not for several books.  Mostly I’m excited because there are lot’s of “oh my God!” moments for long-time readers of the series.  I’ve mentioned the title before– A Plague of Wizards.

Motivations: The Two Dragons

The Two DragonsThe Two Dragons was originally the final third of the massive story that I had decided to call The Steel Dragon.  When I turned it into a series instead, The Two Dragons sat for a long time waiting.  When I finally had finished and published all the other five books, I looked at the manuscript again.  The story still worked, but there needed to be significant changes in the ending.

Senta had picked up a dragon egg in book 4 that I hadn’t originally counted on.  I added that.  The original manuscript had a very long epilog that detailed everything that happened to all the characters.  Since it was going to be a series, I had to take that off.  In its place I needed an ending.  I had written a little bit about Senta arriving in Brechalon (originally thinking that this would be many years later), so I added it.  As it turned out, it tied in well with The Sorceress and her Lovers.

By the way, I am still following the information about the characters in the original epilog.

Motivations: The Young Sorceress

The Young SorceressWhen I had finished the manuscript that became The Voyage of the Minotaur, The Drache Girl, and The Two Dragons, and decided to make it a series, I had to write two new books to fill the spaces in between.  The Dark and Forbidding Land was the first of those, and I think it is a very good addition to the series.  The Young Sorceress would be the second, fitting between The Drache Girl and The Two Dragons.

I had a story that I thought would work well and would be different than anything else in the series.  In the previous four books, I had followed a different character each chapter, with a few rare instances when I jump from one character to another in the same chapter.  In Brechalon though, I had jumped from character to character many times each chapter.  I decided to follow this format.  I think it works well for the story.

I haven’t gotten a lot of feedback on this particular book, so I don’t know what readers think about it as opposed to the other books.  I just read the first review I’ve ever seen for it, and it was pretty positive.  I remember that when I finished the book, I wasn’t really thrilled with it.  Reading it later though, I decided that I liked this one.  That happens to me a lot.

Motivations: The Drache Girl

The Drache GirlThe Drache Girl was originally the second part of the three part novel I wrote in 2007-2008. While I was writing it, it was known as “Colony.” It takes place a little over three years after the events in what became The Voyage of the Minotaur. When I was done, I decided to call it The Sorceress’s Apprentice, but ultimately changed that title to the current one. I don’t know if that was the best decision or not. I wanted to be more original, but the other might have caught more readers’ eyes.

As I mentioned before, this book was inspired by Lord of the Rings, Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, James Michener’s Hawaii, and the movie Zulu. The idea was to create a fantasy world mirroring British colonial imperialism. This part of the story also owes something to British TV series “Hamish MacBeth,” which inspired much of the character of PC Saba Colbshallow, though he had always been planned to have been a copper.

I enjoyed writing The Drache Girl probably more than any other book I’ve written. I really enjoyed the characters at this point in the story– especially Senta and her friends and Saba Colbshallow. It ended up taking me a looong time to publish because I decided ultimately that there needed to be another book between The Voyage of the Minotaur and The Drache Girl: The Dark and Forbidding Land.

Motivations: The Dark and Forbidding Land

The Dark and Forbidding LandThe Dark and Forbidding Land was the first of two books that I squeezed between the events that happened in the original outline of Senta and the Steel Dragon, the other being The Young Sorceress. I enjoyed writing TDAFL and I think it works well. Part of that was because writing about Senta as a pre-teen was my favorite part of writing the entire series.

One of the challenges of writing this book was not to top the events in The Drache Girl. I didn’t want Senta aged 10 to be more powerful and experienced than Senta aged 12. Remember Star Wars, where we watch R2-D2 trudge around in the desert in episode 4, only to find out in episode 1, that he could fly.

The other challenge that I had was that I knew there were going to be characters who were going to die, based on my single book outline. But I was limited in which characters I could kill, because some of them appeared in The Drache Girl and The Two Dragons which were already written. So I sat down and created a whole pack of characters who, unbeknownst to them, were doomed. The down side of this was that I ended up liking several of them and was sorry to see them go. Not all of them ended up dying. So, there are a couple of characters who appear only in books 2 and 4.

I haven’t read The Dark and Forbidding Land in a while, so I have to go back and take a look. My son though, tells me it is his favorite book in the series. When I created the new book covers for the series, book 2 just had to have a T-Rex on it.  I had a choice of one with a red head, as described in the book or one that looked more realistic.  I had to go realistic.

Motivations: Brechalon

BrechalonBy the end of 2009, I had already decided that I was going to publish The Voyage of the Minotaur myself. I had three fairly popular free books out there– His Robot Girlfriend, and the two Eaglethorpe Buxton stories. So I thought, what I really need is a prequel to distribute free that will drive interest for The Voyage of the Minotaur and subsequent books.

Brechalon was a difficult task, because I was trying to set up what would happen in a year or two before the action really starts. Two of my main characters were at this point fairly uninteresting children and a third was in prison. I decided to focus on the others, so I had the Iolanthe-Terrence-Yuah story line, the Iolanthe-Zeah story line and the Augie story line. In addition I followed Zurfina into the prison. Those decisions brought out a couple of other weaknesses. The most interesting thing about Terrence is his drug addiction, but I couldn’t show too much of it without giving it away, and the most interesting thing about Zurfina is her magic, and she was in an anti-magic prison cell. In the end, I was pretty happy with the story, though I don’t think it does much more than hint at what really is to come in The Voyage of the Minotaur.

One of the big inspirations for Augie’s part of the story, as well as the battle scenes in The Voyage of the Minotaur was the movie Zulu starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker.  I think Augie and Terrence probably owe a lot to the characters in the movie (loosely based on real military heroes.)

Of course, it hasn’t been nearly as popular, even given it’s free, as His Robot Wife or Eaglethorpe, but I have had more than one person tell me they’ve read The Voyage of the Minotaur because they first read Brechalon, so it is serving its purpose.
