Characters: Christopher Harris

Astrid Maxxim and the Electric Racecar ChallengeChristopher Harris is Toby’s best friend and is the only student at Rachel Carson High School who’s grades and test scores match Astrid’s.  They both expect to contend with each other for valedictorian.  Christopher, like Toby is also a licensed pilot.

Christopher, who doesn’t like to be called Chris, is an African American with short dark hair.  Both his parents work at Maxxim Industries– his father as an engineer and his mother as a chemist.  I wanted an African American kid among Astrid’s gang, to represent students at a typical school.  I certainly didn’t want a stereotype, so Christopher is not into any sport involving balls, and he is most proud of his grades and his computer skills.  He is in fact, an amalgam of several students I have had over the years.

In books two through four, Christopher has an on-again off-again relationship with Denise, though he’s popular with quite a few girls at school.

New powers are rising in Birmisia. Far to the south, the strange lizardmen of Xiatooq are making themselves known. Closer to home, the new lizzie city Yessonarah finds itself rich in gold—gold the humans covet. As tensions rise, many in Port Dechantagne seem eager to teach the lizzies a lesson in humility. Fourteen year old Iolana Staff finds herself in the center of it all, as she is pulled between her conscience and the conventions of society. Unconcerned with the conflict between human and lizzie, sorceress Senta Bly prepares for her own war, unaware that events will pull her into a life and death confrontation with an old enemy.

The Price of Magic is the latest in a series that chronicles a world of steam power and rifles, where magic has not yet been forgotten. A new colony in a distant lost world has grown from a tiny outpost to a center of civilization in a vast wilderness. The Price of Magic continues a story of adventure and magic, religion and prejudice, steam engines and dinosaurs, angels and lizardmen, machine guns and wizards, sorceresses, bustles and corsets, steam-powered computers, hot air balloons, and dragons.

The Price of Magic – Update

The Price of MagicThe first draft for The Price of Magic is complete.  It is still pretty rough and will take quite a bit of revision, but expect an announcement for preordering and the release date coming soon.

This is book 7 (Eight if you remember there is a book 0) in the Senta and the Steel Dragon series, and involves rising powers in the lands of Birmisia beyond Port Dechantagne.

Characters: Zeah Korlann

Voyage of the Minotaur (New Cover)One of the major characters of the Senta and the Steel Dragon series is Zeah Korlann.  He begins as the head butler for the Dechantagne household.  His daughter is Yuah and they are members of the Zaeri minority religion.  I used Zeah to play out several themes in the story– the rise of a working class person to prominence, religious intolerance, etc.  Originally Zeah was a rather mild mannered fellow anyway, but when I revised the story, I decided he needed a stammer.  The stammer only shows itself when he is under stress– whenever he is around Iolanthe.

Characters: Augustus Dechantagne

Brechalon (New Cover)I created Augie to be a mirror to his brother. He’s someone that nobody expects to be competent, and he often isn’t, but he might have been had he ever been given the chance to grow up that way. One of Augie’s great failures– not correctly translating the aboriginies’ language results in one of the major plot points. On the other hand, in battle, both against armed cultists in the jungle and thousands of lizard men in Birmisia, he proves quite heroic. Augie was fun to write, in that his natural state is easy-going and pleasant, making him quite the counter to his two siblings who are serious and wrapped up in their own torments.

Augie owes a lot to Michael Caine’s character in Zulu, something I pointed to when I went back and wrote book 0, and had him accompanied by a Colour Sergeant Bourne.

My Writing: 2014

In early 2014, I finished and published The Sorceress and her Lovers.  This book had a lot of set up for an additional volume in the series, so I immediately got to work writing an outline for the next story.  It is the most complete outline that I’ve ever written for a book, with much more detail than I usually include.

I started immediately on the next Astrid Maxxim book: Astrid Maxxim and the Antarctic Expedition.  I got about three quarters of the way done, very quickly, and then ran out of steam a bit.  I struggled to get back into it.  I tinkered with 82 Eridani and The Jungle Girl for a while.  When I went back to Astrid, I found that I had totally goofed around my outline and the book was going to be way too long.  I reordered my chapters and trimmed out a lot of what I didn’t need.  Then I finished it.  Consequently it has one fewer chapter than all the other Astrid Maxxim books.

As I was editing Astrid Maxxim and the Antarctic Expedition, I decided that I would publish a book of poetry.  I have about 1,000 poems I’ve written over the years, so I gathered up those I had already decided were my best and put them in a single volume.  I struggled to come up with a name, eventually deciding on Desperate Poems.  Of course, as an unknown poet, it would have to be a free volume.

Once Astrid was finished, I started on a horror story called Love and the Darkness.  When I finish, its going to be a free story.  I got about 75% done, and is so often the case, ran out of gas.  I’m not overly thrilled with the story, so when I get back to it, it will have to be much revised.

While doing Love and the Darkness, I sat down and wrote a dream sequence for an Astrid Maxxim story.  I didn’t really even have a story in mind, I just wanted to get down this idea.  I was so thrilled with the little bit I wrote, I decided to continue on and wrote Astrid Maxxim and her Hypersonic Space Plane.  I think this may be the quickest book I’ve ever written, but I really like the story.  I contacted Matthew Riggenbach at Shaed Studios to do a cover for the book and went ahead and had him do one for the following in the series too.

About this time, I had a great idea for a robot book.  It wasn’t a Mike and Patience story, but could work in the same universe, so that’s where I set it.  This too was an easy book to write and I finished His Robot Girlfriend: Charity just before the end of the year.

Characters: Senta Bly

The Price of MagicSenta Bly is the title character from the Senta and the Steel Dragon series.  The funny thing about Senta is that I never intended to write a book about her, let alone make her the main character in a series. Here now, I’ve chronicled her life from age 6 to 24, in eight books.  I originally wrote a description from her viewpoint that was supposed to showcase the setting of Brech City. When I eventually plotted out the trilogy that would become books 1, 3, and 5 of the Senta and the Steel Dragon Series, she took on more and more importance. When I added books 0, 2, and 4 to the mix, the entire story really became her story.

I’m looking forward to completing The Price of Magic summer and am already thinking about the next book in the series.  I won’t get started on that until at least next year, but I’m already feeling the bug to write it.

Senta is precocious and self-confident. As she grows up she learns more and more magic and discovers that she is a powerful sorceress. One of the most fun things about writing this series is that the characters are so inter-connected. Senta has relationships of one sort or another with more than a hundred major and minor characters. Hopefully this diversity makes her as much fun to read about as she is to write about.

The Drache Girl – Chapter 19 Excerpt

The Drache Girl (New Cover)Senta finished washing her face and brushing her teeth. She walked back to her bed and examined the dress that lay there. Even though Zurfina had not returned, clothing continued to appear each morning. Sometimes Senta ignored it and wore one of the dresses that she had purchased for herself at Mrs. Bratihn’s, but more often she simply slipped into whatever strange accouterments appeared. She had already put on her underclothes, including her bustle, when she lifted up the dress by the shoulders to examine it. This one was actually not too bad. It was black with puffy white sleeves and white lace trim around the neckline and the bottom. The only problem was that the bottom was just below her knees.

Senta rolled her eyes then slipped on the dress. She reached behind her and easily fastened the row of tiny buttons that ran up the back. Opening her top dresser drawer, she rummaged around and found her knee-high socks with one inch horizontal black and white stripes. She sat down on the bed and pulled them on, and then put on her black patent leather high heels. Looking in the cheval glass, she decided that it didn’t look too bad.

Once downstairs, she thought for a brief moment about preparing some breakfast, but decided she’d rather walk to Mrs. Finkler’s. It was a new month and her pockets were once again filled with her stipend. The desire not to have to clean the kitchen and the fact of her newfound wealth had both conspired to disincline Senta to cook since Zurfina had left. And as Bessemer didn’t seem to mind, preferring to catch and eat wild prey anyway, she scarcely took the time to prepare any meals at home anymore. She looked at the steel dragon’s empty corner and then headed out the front door.

Senta had almost completely crossed the yard before she noticed Graham standing at the gate. His brown hair was neatly combed and his freckled face had been recently scrubbed. He wore a tan and white horizontally striped shirt that made him look chubbier than he actually was and a new pair of dungarees cut extra long and rolled up into cuffs over his work boots. In his right hand, he clasped a handful of small white flowers.

“You look kind of ridiculous,” she said.

“You should talk. I mean… you look nice. Here, these are for you.” He shoved the handful of flowers in her direction.

“Thanks. I didn’t think there were any flowers in bloom yet.”

“These are the only ones. They grow in the dinosaur poo.”

“Pretty. So what made you decide to come around here?”

“I don’t know.”

“You must have some idea. I haven’t seen you in a whole month.”

Graham mumbled something.

“What?”

“I said I guess I missed you or something.”

Senta smiled and stepping over to him wrapped her arms around his left arm.

“I was on my way to Mrs. Finkler’s for breakfast. Come with me.”

“I’ve already eaten,” said Graham. He didn’t say this to decline her invitation and she didn’t take it that way. It was understood between them that for him two meals in a row was no problem. “I’m buying though.”

“Then it will be a real date,” said Senta.

“No, not really.”

Graham turned and headed toward town, Senta still holding onto his left arm.

“I think you’ve grown since I saw you last,” said Senta, who was several inches taller than Graham.

“Yep. Da says I’m in a spurt. Look. If we’re going to be friends…”

“We are friends,” she corrected.

“Okay. Yes, we are friends. But you can’t go fighting my fights for me. You have to let me take care of myself. I’m a man.”

“Nope. That’s not how it works. You are my friend and if anyone messes with you, I will crush them.”

Graham stopped and pulled his arm from her grasp so that he could put both of his hands on his hips.

“And,” she continued. “If anyone messes with me, you can do the same, just like you did with that Freedonian wanker Streck.”

The boy thought for a moment. “Well, that seems fair.”

They walked the rest of the way to town square and easily found a seat inside the bakery café. Graham surprised Senta by pulling out her chair for her.

“Well, well, well. Look what we have here.” Gaylene Dokkins wiped the table with a cloth, and then crossed her legs at the ankles, leaning with her elbow atop Graham’s head. “My little brother must have finally got up the nerve to go see his girlfriend. Did he tell you he’s been moping around the house for weeks, mooning over you?”

“Shut up Gaylene,” whined Graham.

“I think he’s just sweet,” said Senta.

“Well, as my Da always says, ‘to each his own’. What can I get you?”
