Mini-Review: Royal Harlot

Royal Harlot by Susan Holloway Scott is not the type of book I usually read. To my recollection, it is one of maybe two historical romance novels that I have read. That being said, I enjoyed the book quite a bit. It seemed well-researched and the characters were realistic enough for the History teacher in me. There was plenty of sex (always a plus) and the story moved quickly along. I wasn’t expecting an intense plot and there wasn’t one, since there rarely is an intense plot to real life people, but the lives of Charles II and his consorts were interesting enough. If you enjoy your History mixed with plenty of heaving, bodice-bursting breasts then this is the book for you.

“Royal Harlot” by Susan Holloway Scott was not a book I would have chosen to read on my own. I picked it up specifically for the Historical Fiction Book Challenge. On the whole, I enjoyed it. I had not read much on Barbara Palmer, or this time period, so learning something about a new part of history is always fun.

I found the characters and her point of view believable, and the author approached it in a realistic way without apologies. The Duchess was mostly interested in having fun and feathering her own nest, and in that way, she wasn’t too different from most people I know today.

The sex was graphic enough to be interesting, though I would have liked a bit more description of the places and things around the people (the clothes were well described). Mostly I felt it dragged on a bit, because not much really happened. While I’m sure that is realistic, it makes for slow reading.

If you enjoy historical fiction, “Royal Harlot” will be for you. If you are a fan of history, give it a try. Otherwise, maybe not.

Between grad school, teaching, and trying to write I’m finding very little time to read. I’m still working my way through Royal Harlot by Susan Holloway Scott. It’s not my usual type of read, but I’m enjoying it well enough. Of course I’m reading it on my Sony Reader, having downloaded it from the Sony eBook Store.

Having finished and thoroughly enjoyed O Pioneers, I have decided to read Royal Harlot for my second Historical Novel Reading Challenge Book (see right sidebar). There have been plenty of great reviews of this book (here… here… here… and of course here), so I’m not going to try and do one even after I’m done reading. I just not that good of a reviewer, though I will let you know if I liked it.
