Gods Behaving Badly – A Review

I just finished reading “Gods Behaving Badly” by Marie Phillips. Of course I read it on my Sony PRS-505 eBook Reader, and it is available in a variety of eBook formats, just in time for Read an eBook week. Simply put, this was the best book I have read in a long time. It was funny, sad, surprising, sad again, and then funny again.

Imagine the Greek Olympians were still around today, power diminished, living in London. Though they still do their jobs– Apollo still sees that the sun comes up and goes down, Ares still manages war, and Hermes still delivers the dead to Charon the boatman as well as over-seeing the world’s money– they have little extra power and have to work for their money. Aphrodite has a job as a phone sex operator, Artemis walks dogs, and Apollo has an idea for a television show in which he plays a psychic.

The book is well-researched and the gods are perfectly portrayed. The two main human characters in the story are very real and their relationship is very touching. Most of all, the book is extremely well-written. It is very witty, well-plotted, and the language use is wonderful.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. If you have a love of mythology or fantasy you will really appreciate it.

Mobile Read Forums

Mobile Read Forums is a great place for information about eBooks and eBook readers of all varieties. It is also a great place to find free eBooks. If the book you want is in their vast library, it is the BEST place to get it. Unlike Manybooks.net or Feedbooks.com, where the books are laid out by computer program, the books at Mobile Read Forums have been lovingly crafted by people.

Books Everyone Should Read – Part 5

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Not the first detective in fiction, but clearly the most famous, Sherlock Holmes definitely qualifies as a classic. Read this book. It’s great. It’s free. Download it HERE in a variety of eBook formats. This is the link to Feedbooks.com, but it can be downloaded from Manybooks.net and other purveyors of free eBooks.

Books Everyone Should Read – Part 4

Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu

Actually a novella, this vampires story predates Dracula. By far my favorite vampire story, it really plays up the predator-prey aspect of the myth, and of course there is plenty of lesbian subtext. Download it in several eBook formats for free HERE. This is a link to Feedbooks.com, but it can be found in a variety of sites devoted to free books.

More Free eBooks

From John comes word of another great spot to pick up free eBooks. OnlineUniversitiesandColleges .com are offering downloads of 100 great books. Check it out here.

Books Everyone Should Read – Part 3

Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs

One of the most underrated books of all time, this is a great adventure, a great love story, and a brilliant story. Get it for free in a variety of eBook formats here. This link will take you to Feedbooks, but the book is available at Manybooks.net and other perveyors of free books.

Finding Free eBooks

As I’ve mentioned before, Finding Free eBooks is a great resource for locating… guess. Free eBooks! If you look to the right, just below the City of Amathar books, you will find a little button linking to this site. If you are smart, you’ll check it at least once a day, because it is updated OFTEN.

And don’t forget to download the free PDF books right here on this page. More will be forthcoming– hopefully on a monthly basis.

Free PDF Book Download

I’m pretty happy with the response to the free pdf download of “His Robot Girlfriend”. The whole idea from the beginning was to get it out there and get it to as many people as possible. As soon as I have the final edit done, I hope to get it on Feedbooks and similar sites.

I would also like a review. If anyone out there has one, I’ll post it here, good or bad.

I’m so happy with the number of people downloading that I’m thinking I should write another just for free eBook distribution. If my next book is a Steel Dragon book I won’t, because I have dedicated myself to getting that series published by a traditional book publisher, but maybe I’ll write one of the others with that in mind.

I’m also going to be offering some free classics in the form of ebooks here. You can get some of these books from other sites for free but these are books you should definitely get here or somewhere else, because they are great. Look for at least one new addition to the City of Amathar catolog on the 3rd of each month.

Finding Free eBooks

There just couldn’t be a more timely and valuable blog site than Finding Free eBooks. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t find out about this wonderful resource until its moderator Christine posted a comment here at City of Amathar, but now that I have, you can bet I’ll be checking it on a daily basis. Here you can find not just the big distributors of free ebooks like Manybooks and Feedbooks, but individual authors and small presses wanting to see their books as widely read as possible. Make it one of your regular sites.

Sony PRS-505 and Feedbooks

I’ve mentioned Feedbooks http://www.feedbooks.com/ before. It is a great source for free ebooks. As I click over today, I see the four featured books are Moonfleet by J. Meade Faulkner, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells, and On the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin. Pretty cool, huh? You can of course find tens of thousands of other books on the site as well. But if you click on one of these titles, you will be given the choice of downloading them in one of six different formats– epub, Mobipocket/Kindle, PDF, SonyReader, iLiad, Custom PDF. Now the Sony Reader will read the epub, and both types of pdfs, but if you have one, you would naturally click on the SonyReader choice. This in fact does not give you a native Sony file. It gives you a pdf formatted for the Sony Reader. This is fine, and it works great, but by using Calibre (see yesterday’s post) you can convert the file into a native Sony lrf.
