I just wanted to say how much I love this story. It was the first thing I read from feedbooks, and I was in no way disappointed. I read it pretty much on one sitting. I did have to put it down to take care of something, but I was thinking about it the whole time I was reading it. In fact, you inspired me to finally post my first story. Wes, I thoroughly enjoyed His Robot Girlfriend. As an avid Star Trek fan I especially enjoyed the references when they were in Vegas. And I don’t like the Borg either!
I found the world you painted fascinating. A world almost the same as today’s, but with subtle differences.
I had an older download, so I noticed the errors 🙂 which I’m sure you’ve now caught. I downloaded the mobi version and there was a section in chapter 8 where all the quote marks and apostrophes were replaced with symbols and letters.

“His Robot Girlfriend” was thoroughly enjoyable. I found it titillating, but it never decended into the grotesque or vulgar. My wife is a 5th through 7th-grade French and Spanish teacher at a private school here in Fort Worth, Texas, and I laughed out loud at the first few chapters especially, where the classes are described.
I was intrigued at the particular version of near-future reality painted in words, which was nicely subliminal. One picks up that mankind was not able to completely arrest global warming, that certain things like food and clothing are anywhere from 100% to 200% higher, but interestingly, a sophisticated, humanlike robot is a mere $2700. (Forgive any minor inaccuracies. I just got done reading the book over the course of a couple of days). Fascinating!
I, too, was going to sheepishly submit a list of typos, but looks like that isn’t necessary.

I’m upset though, because His Robot Girlfriend has fallen to the fifth most popular new book download for the week, though it is still climbing the all-time chart. Get over to feedbooks and download it. It’s free! You’ll find plenty of other great reading material too.
Exactly three months ago, I reported that His Robot Girlfriend had been downloaded 1, 234 times. I was very excited. It is still available on the same two sites, Feedbooks and Smashwords, and it is now on Manybooks.net as well. It still seems to be popular. As of today it has been downloaded….

His Robot Girlfriend is the most popular new book download at Feedbooks.com for both the week and the month, being downloaded about fifty times a day.
Getting a book published is tough. If you are an unknown author, it’s really tough. So ebooks seem like the answer. The whole ebook phenomenon is new and getting in on the ground floor seems like an easy way to break into the publishing world. But there are problems.
First, how do you make an ebook? There just aren’t any good ebook creation programs out there. The commercial ebook programs don’t create ebook files at all in any of the common formats. Instead they create an executable file that creates a proprietary ebook. I don’t know about you, but I don’t download executable files unless I’m absolutely sure that they come from a reputable source, and most unknown authors are… well, unknown. There are a few freeware ebook programs out there, but try figuring out how to use them when the instructions are all in Russian!
You can publish through Lulu and get an “electronic version” of your book, but it is only in pdf form. In fact, there are plenty of ways to make a good-looking pdf, but as my friends at Mobile Read Forums constantly remind me, pdf’s are not ebooks. PDFs are designed for printing. People with ebook readers don’t like them, because the text may not reflow correctly (Sony) or they won’t work at all without conversion (Kindle).
Even if you did manage to create your own, where would you sell it? There are a few file hosting sites with payment arrangements, but not ones that are freqented by ebook buyers. You can get your books out at Feedbooks and Manybooks, but not if you want to get paid for your work.
That leaves Smashwords, where you can upload your file and their program (called the meatgrinder) converts it to the various formats. Some people have had very bad luck with this conversion, getting garbage out the other end. I have worked very hard to make sure that my books follow their style guide and I check what I’m getting, and so far I think the books are acceptable though not perfect (about on par with what I get from Feedbooks). What they really need is a way to edit the final products once they have been converted.
If anyone knows of an Ebook Creation Program that actually creates ebooks in real ebook formats (epub, lrf, mobi, etc) let me know, I will buy it. Then I’ll work at getting my books in ebook stores.
