The story that became His Robot Girlfriend consisted originally of some short flash fiction and the characters were not very well developed. When I decided to turn it into a book, I completely rewrote it, adding an ending. I had to turn some cardboard people into real characters. In the case of Mike Smith, I just decided to make him– me. He was a school teacher, about five years older than me, when I started, and instead of being happily married with two kids, he was a widower with two surviving children. Personality-wise, language-wise, and description-wise, he’s about as close to me as I could get. As i neared the end, I started feeling a little uncomfortable that he was so much like me, and I began working in little things that made him at least somewhat different. In the end, physically at least, Mike changes quite a bit. Patience really gets him into shape. I just started at the gym two months ago (though I don’t have a Daffodil pushing me along), so this might be a case of life imitating art.

The New Nook?
I just got my April Kindle royalty payments (thanks Kindle readers, especially in the UK) and it happens to coincide with my decision to buy a new ereader. I enjoy my iPad, but it’s too big to stick in my pocket or carry to the gym. I almost bought a Kindle, but the only ones at Walmart were the ones “with special offers.” If my device is going to act as a rolling billboard, they’re going to have to pay me a hell of a lot more than $25.00 for the privilage. I think I would pay twice as much for the non-“special offers” model.
Then Barnes and Noble announced the new Nook. I wasn’t that impressed with the original Nook, and don’t care for a Nook 2 since I already have an iPad. But the new Nook has some very cool features– a screen similer to the Kindle, only with touch, the ability to add your own screen savers, and it is very small. It won’t be out until June 10, though so I have to wait and check it out before I buy one.
Work in Progress: Five Novels
I’m dedicated to publishing 5 books this year, and I’m still hopeful that working as a writer full time this summer I’ll be able to make that goal. The first of course is already out: His Robot Wife. So here’s what the rest of the year will look like:
His Robot Wife
Blood Trade
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 4: The Young Sorceress
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 5: The Two Dragons
?
Book five may be any one of several projects. Of course I may not make my goal. I’m hopeful though, as last year I published 5 books.
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0: Brechalon
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 1: The Voyage of the Minotaur
Tesla’s Stepdaughters
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 2: The Dark and Forbidding Land
Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 3: The Drache Girl.

Work in Progress: Blood Trade
As promised, a little bit about my upcoming book: Blood Trade.
Blood Trade is the story of Goth Girl/Former Army Ranger/Private Detective/Tattoo Model/Vampire Hunter Xochitl McKenna, who is thrown into the world of human trafficking committed by both humans and vampires, as she hunts for a twelve year old runaway. Crossing paths, and sometimes getting in her way, are Vegas Cop Vince Rizello, mysterious FBI agent Dominic Zielinski; Novelyne Cavendish, a 200 year old ditsy blonde vampire, and Larry the werewolf.
Work in Progress: Blood Trade
My next book will be Blood Trade. It’s coming along nicely, despite my only being able to work on it after school– on weekends I’m too tired. As soon as summer starts, I’ll finish the first draft. I’m considering several professional editors for it, now that I’m making enough in royalties to actually afford one.
Blood Trade began as my take on a vampire story, but now that I’m in it, while it is chock-a-bock full of vampires (and werewolves), they are relatively incidental to the real story. My three main characters, the good, the bad, and the ugly are all human beings. This will also probably be my first story that carries and “Adult Only” warning. It’s very, very dark and very, very violent. Of course nobody seems to give a crap about that. There’s also sex, violent sex, and rape which (at least here in America) freaks everyone out. Hence the warning.
I am just finishing chapter five of thirteen chapters that I’ve plotted out. When I’m actually finished with the draft, I may be down to twelve. That often happens with me. That will be about 52,000 words. Tomorrow, I’ll give you a little bit about the story.
His Robot Girlfriend: 5 Star Review
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting, May 1, 2011
By N. M. Legel “Author of Deadly Vanity” (Phoenix, AZ) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: His Robot Girlfriend (Perfect Paperback)
This short story is a fun read and I, personally, love that the author took inflation and commercialism into account when building his vision of America in the not-so-distant future. There are a few conflicts going on in this story that I would love to have seen developed further, but that is to be expected in a story this length that is trying to cover as complex a concept as falling in love with a robot. I can definitely say that this story is worth the little money it costs and I have since purchased the sequel to this story and I am looking forward to reading it.

Currently Reading: A World of Difference
It’s been a while since I posted a “Currently Reading.” I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time to read much. A world of difference is a stand-alone science fiction novel by the master of alternate history: Harry Turtledove.
