Women of Power: Chapter Four Excerpt

“No fricking way,” said Stella, looking around.

“This is perfect,” said Linda in a breathless whisper.

Linda was dressed in her secret identity—sensible shoes, socks, pleated skirt, sweater, and brown wig.  Stella had on a blue sundress, but she was hardly unrecognizable to anyone from Chicago.  The apartment agent, a middle-aged man in a very sharp grey suit ushered them past the entryway.

“As you can see, the entry opens into the dining room.  We have double doors here into the kitchen, which has an island bar and three stools.  This is all furnished of course, just like you see it.”  They moved through the kitchen and into the living room with a very high ceiling.  “Just the right size.  Plenty of room and yet still cozy.  The couch and a couple of armchairs, entertainment system, and a beautiful gas fireplace, and right through those doors is one of the two balconies.”

“This is perfect,” said Linda again.

“It is perfect for two young and important ladies, such as yourselves.”  He gave Stella a wink.  “If you go right from the entrance, past the linen closet and the powder room, you find a guestroom, which of course could be made into an office or a study or an armory, and the smaller of the two master bedrooms.  It has its own bath with a combo shower-tub, a walk-in closet, and its own balcony.  The larger master bedroom is through here.”  He pointed at double doors leading out of the living room.  “It has a larger bath, with both a shower and a tub, as well as a walk-in closet, but alas, no balcony.”

Linda danced from one foot to the other as though she had to pee.

“Can you give us a minute?” asked Stella.

“Of course.  But one thing before I go.  People in, how shall I say it, a certain line of work, might well expect to provide a considerable security deposit, especially if their previous residence was completely destroyed.”

Revision in Progress

I’ve started in earnest revising Blood Trade.  First up, I’m going through all the notes from alpha and beta readers.  I’ve essentially got 20 copies of the book, chopped into chapter long pieces, filled with notes.  I’ll make the suggested changes that I agree with and leave the rest as is.  Then I’ll go through and do a close re-write.  When that is done, it may be ready to start editing.

Blood Trade: Cover Contest Results

The votes are in and this is the cover chosen.  Now that Women of Power is in the can, I can get on the first revision of Blood Trade.  At this point I’m expecting it to take till the end of September, so you should expect a release about November 1st.

Women of Power: Chapter Three Excerpt

All American Girl looked up into the horrible, grinning face of the Atomic Jack-O-Lantern.  He didn’t speak.  He just stared at her with that frightful face and glowed with the radioactive energy that was even now, draining away her life energy.  Suddenly a blue and white streak hit the Jack-O-Lantern in the chest, knocking him away.  Stella took a deep breath and tried to refocus her vision.  She was so weak that it was difficult to even move up into a sitting position, but she could slowly feel the energy returning to her muscles.  A minute later the blue and white streak was back.  Standing over her like a blonde goddess was Skygirl.
“No fricking way,” said Stella.
“Here, let me help you up.”
“I can get up myself.”  Stella climbed to her feet.  Her knees felt like overcooked pasta.  “Where’s glow boy?”
“He’s gone.”  Skygirl brushed her honey hair back behind her ear.  “I hit him three or four times, but then he just kind of blinked and disappeared.”
“Yeah, he does that,” said Stella, looking sidelong at the other super.  “You don’t have your boots on.”
“I was just out for a walk,” said Skygirl.  “You know, in my secret identity.”
“Your what?”
“My secret identity.”
“You’re Linda Ford,” said Stella.
“Shh.  Not so loud.”
“It’s not a secret.  Anybody can Google you and find it.  It’s at the top of your Wikipedia page.”
“What are you so upset about?”
Stella put her hands on her hips.
“Well first of all, my home got knocked down, and all my stuff is gone.  Then a glowing excuse for a Halloween costume tried to kill me, and you let him get away.”
“We’ll get him next time.”
“We?  There is no we.  There’s just me—me and Chicago—my kind of town.”
