Revision and Editing

As I work on finishing Women of Power, just a bit about the revision and editing process.  As I write, I solicite alpha readers (friends, family, and members of my writers’ group) to give me feedback as I go.  I make major changes as I go along– adding, cutting, moving sections around.  When the entire first draft is done, I have my beta readers (often but not always the same people) go back to it.  At this point, I’m not editing.  I’m revising.  I’m looking for changes to be made in the storytelling.

Once I’ve got the manuscript the way I want it, I give it a few editing passes.  Editing is much harder to do on your own manuscript because you know it.  You’re very likely to skip over errors because you know what’s supposed to be there.  If possible, I have my crack team of grammarians go over the manuscript again.  My final pass uses the program Text2Go to read the manuscript aloud to me as I follow along in the text.  I’ve caught many errors that I missed and many that editors missed.

Once all that is done and my story is ready to go out, it’s a quick trip through the formatting machine (That’s me.  I format it myself.) and then it’s available to ebook lovers everywhere.

Women of Power – First Draft Finished

Women of Power is done; at least the first draft is done.  In fact, as I write this, I’m about a third of the way through the first revision.  It’s going quickly for reasons I’ve mentioned before.  This will definitely be out before the end of August.  After that I can work on revising Blood Trade– a much bigger job, both because it’s longer and because it’s rougher.

In the meantime, I’m about a quarter way through the first draft of Astrid Maxxim and her Amazing Hoverbike.  More details to follow.

Matt Damon Knows

Matt Damon defends teachers and knows what the hell he’s talking about.  I will be going to every movie he ever makes (I already see most of them).

His Robot Girlfriend no longer available in Hardbound

Do to some change in the way Lulu works their distribution, and which is impossible for a normal human being to figure out, His Robot Girlfriend is no longer available as a case wrapped hard bound book.  This isn’t much of a big deal, as it is still available as a digest paperback, not to mention available free wherever you find fine ebooks.

Women of Power almost done, plus a new project.

I’m down to the last few pages of Women of Power and I expect to be done in 2-3 days with the first draft.  As I already mentioned, this story is already in pretty good shape, so it will probably be a quick revise and edit.  Look for a release date announcement soon.

When I’m done with Women of Power, I need to get back to revising Blood Trade and writing Senta and the Steel Dragon 4: The Young Sorceress, and I will, but as so often happens, I am also working on something new.  I skipped right over something I’ve been planning to start for months and started something I just thought up.

I was thinking about how much I enjoyed reading Edgar Rice Burroughs as a kid and how much fun I had writing Princess of Amathar, which was very much a tribute to Burroughs and John Carter of Mars.  Then I remembered that before John Carter, the first books I loved were Tom Swift Junior Books.  They were wonderful, simple, books that reflected their time so well– the late 50s.  You can find authors on the web, who have revised the Tom Swift books to make them “up to date” and current, and that’s fine.  I wanted to take that feel the books had and recreate it with my own ideas.  So my new book is about a fourteen year old girl inventor and her friends and their amazing adventures.  This will be my first real “children’s book.”  The working title is Astrid Maxxim and her Amazing Hoverbike.

Work in Progress: Women of Power

Well, I should have the draft of Women of Power done within the next ten days or so.  It is a lot closer to being publishable than Blood Trade, so it’s entirely possible it may get done first.  This is because I have been working on this so long, that I have gone back and revised the first two thirds about a dozen times already.  I just need to finish it, revise the end, clean it up, edit, listen to it aloud (second edit) and it can go out as an ebook.  It’s going to be only about 35,000 words– a bit longer than His Robot Wife, and a bit shorter than His Robot Girlfriend, so expect it to sell for 99 cents.

I think it’s fair to say that if you liked either of my Robot books or Princess of Amathar, you’ll like this one.  Also, my daughter is hard at work slaving over her Laptop, photoshopping some art for a possible new cover.  When it’s ready, you’ll see it here first.
