Vegas is going to hell– literally. Werewolves run through the streets and the vampires are taking over. Former army ranger/Goth tattoo model/private eye Xochitl McKenna doesn’t like it either, especially when it comes between her and her clients. But are the vampires and werewolves the greatest threat, or is it something or someone much closer to her? Warning: Adult Content.

Women of Power: Chapter 7 Excerpt

Stella’s cell phone rang again.  She picked it up from the night stand, slid it open, and held it to her face.
“Yeah?”
“Stella?  It’s Dynagirl.”
“Hey, Dina.  Perry’s not here.”
“I know he’s not there.  This is an EAS call.  We have a situation.  We’re being invaded.”
“From Canada or Mexico?”
“From space.”
“What, again?”
“Yes.  Get ready and keep your phone with you.  I’ll call again.”
Stella got out of bed and took a quick look out the window.  A massive mother ship was moving into position over the city.   She hopped into the shower.  There was no way she was going to fight aliens without first washing her hair.  After brushing her teeth and throwing on a little hair gel, she squeezed into a fresh All American Girl costume.   A glance in the other bedroom told her that Linda was still not home—not the best time for Skygirl to go AWOL.  Stepping out onto the balcony, Stella sat down in the patio chair and waited.
The gigantic ship stopped at a point where it was almost exactly centered over the Sears Tower, or Willis Tower as they were trying to get everyone to call it.  Stella estimated it at five miles in diameter and about a quarter mile thick.  Around it were buzzing dozens of small craft, more every minute, though it was unclear to her from what point on the great craft they were launching.
After several minutes, Stella went back inside and sat down in the living room, turning on the TV.  Tanya Everson appeared on the screen.
“Word comes to us this morning from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory that the spaceships we see above us arrived on a trajectory that seems to indicate they are from 61 Cygni, a double star system that is approximately 11.4 light years from our sun.  What else can you tell us, Bill?”
The picture changed to newsman Bill Drake standing in Lincoln Park.  In the background, Stella could see that the statue of Johnny Liberty was back in place.  He was still missing his cape.
“Viewers will remember that it was just three years ago when the Earth faced invasion from Epsilon Eridani.  Ironically, scientists tell us that the two space fleets were actually flying through the vastness of interstellar vacuum for much of the same time…”
“That’s not ironic, Bill,” said Stella to the TV.  “It’s just coincidental.”
“…also that the earlier invasion was only stopped at a great cost, including the loss of arguably Earth’s greatest hero, Skyman.”
Stella’s cell phone rang again.
“Linda?”
“No, it’s Dynagirl again.  Do you know where Skygirl is?”
“No.”
“Well, if you find her, keep in contact.  I’m on my way over.”
“Really?”
“Yes.  There are no ships attacking Detroit.”
“I guess that’s one good thing about the population shift,” said Stella.
“I suppose so,” replied Dynagirl.  “I’ll see you soon.”
“That’s enough waiting around,” said Stella, and with a leap flew out the balcony door and into the sky.

Revision and Editing

As I work on finishing Women of Power, just a bit about the revision and editing process.  As I write, I solicite alpha readers (friends, family, and members of my writers’ group) to give me feedback as I go.  I make major changes as I go along– adding, cutting, moving sections around.  When the entire first draft is done, I have my beta readers (often but not always the same people) go back to it.  At this point, I’m not editing.  I’m revising.  I’m looking for changes to be made in the storytelling.

Once I’ve got the manuscript the way I want it, I give it a few editing passes.  Editing is much harder to do on your own manuscript because you know it.  You’re very likely to skip over errors because you know what’s supposed to be there.  If possible, I have my crack team of grammarians go over the manuscript again.  My final pass uses the program Text2Go to read the manuscript aloud to me as I follow along in the text.  I’ve caught many errors that I missed and many that editors missed.

Once all that is done and my story is ready to go out, it’s a quick trip through the formatting machine (That’s me.  I format it myself.) and then it’s available to ebook lovers everywhere.

My Nook has Arrived.

My new nook has arrived.  I’ve had it all of four hours now and I’m loving it.  The touch screen is very nice.  I took it to the barber, to read while I waited.  Turns out I didn’t have to wait too long and I didn’t get to read too much.  Tomorrow I’m going to Barnes and Noble and try some of the in-store specials.

I’ve loaded all the ebooks that are on my To Read list and they appear just as they should in the menu, and I’ve tried loading a book with Calibre, which worked just fine.  I already have some books in mind to buy, but there are so many free ebooks out there too.

What is a Book?

There has been a lot of discussion about ebooks destroying the publishing industry, and many people crying about the demise of the book.  It kind of begs the question, “what is a book?”  Is a book a collection of paper with a binding, or is it a collection of thoughts and ideas and language?  I think Amazon gets it right in their Kindle commercial when the actor says “this IS a real book.”

I think the big problem for the publishing industry is that they have been trying to sell paper, when they should have been trying to sell thoughts and ideas and language.  Paper books are just the medium.  We should no more bemoan their loss than we did VHS tape– well maybe a bit more, they have been around for half a millennium or so.  Still, no one cried that VHS tapes were going away in favor of DVD.  We knew that it was what’s on the media that was important.  The same is true for the printed page.  It’s not the paper and ink.  To paraphrase Bill Clinton: “It’s the words, stupid.”

New Nook on Order

After stopping by Barnes and Noble and trying out the new nook simple touch ereader, I ordered one.  I was very impressed with the responsiveness and quality of the touch screen and I have been thinking about getting a new ereader for a while.  I also like that it uses the ePub format, so that I can get books everywhere (except Amazon, alas).  I used ePub books on my Sony and use them on my iPad, so that is the format I use most.  I’ll give you an update after I’ve got it in hand and have used it for a while.

His Robot Girlfriend Tops 150,000 Downloads

There has been a huge increase in downloads of His Robot Girlfriend in the past month– although it has been downloaded at more than 5,000 times per month for some time.  Although available at Manybooks, Smashwords, and Feedbooks, it seems that readers are discovering it now at Kobo, Diesel, iBooks, and B&N.

I’ll be honest.  I was happy enough with it when it was first done, but now I think I’ve improved quite a bit in my story telling and writing and I’m a little embarrassed that it’s not better than it is.  Oh well, many people seem to like it– there are more 5 star reviews than 1 star reviews.

Record Book Sales

I’m pretty excited.  My books are selling well.  Prior to 2011, the most books that I had sold in a month was 65.  Since most Indy authors sell fewer than 100 books, I wasn’t too discouraged.  I write what I would want to read, and I think that most of my books don’t have much of a “hook.”  When people start reading them though, I seem to get pretty good feedback.  So I knew that at some point I would hook a few readers.  I also suspected that His Robot Wife would be the book to hook a few.

His Robot Wife came out in February, and I sold over 100 books that month.  Then in March, I sold almost 500!  Here (as I write this), April has just started and I’ve already sold over 500 this month!  As I mentioned before, most of them are in the UK, but also quite a few in Australia and Canada.  Thanks to all my readers out there.  I appreciate you.
