The Price of Magic – Chapter 2 Excerpt

The Price of Magic - NewAfter a quick turn at the corner of Forest Avenue, she brought the car to a stop along the side of the street, not quite in front of McCoort and McCoort Publishing. There seemed to be an unusual number of cars parked up and down either side of Forest. Walking up the steps, they entered the front door, causing a bell above it to ring.

The publishing house had recently been renovated with the printing presses moved next door to the building that housed the Birmisia Gazette. This allowed McCoort & McCoort Print Shop to expand into a spacious bookstore. A dozen large counters were filled with books, and a glass case along the back wall even featured antique editions. In the center of the room, a table had been set up and a dozen people were waiting in queue to meet and receive an autograph from world famous writer Isaak Wissinger.

“Why, I didn’t even know Mr. Wissinger was here today,” said Terra, stepping to the back of the line. “Did you?”

“I confess I had heard words to that effect,” said Iolana, taking her place beside her cousin. Esther fell in behind them.

It was more than thirty minutes before they reached the front of the queue. Iolana had stoically endured the wait, but Terra had fidgeted the entire time. At last they stood at the table opposite the Freedonian writer.

“Lady Iolana, Lady Terra,” he said, jumping to his feet. “What an unexpected surprise.”

“It shouldn’t be a complete surprise, Mr. Wissinger,” said Iolana, offering her hand, which the writer shook. “Our whole family are admirers.”

“My father had several first editions of your books,” added Terra. “And that was when he lived in Brechalon and you lived in Freedonia. It’s a pity he never had the chance to meet you.”

“Indeed,” said the writer, sitting back down on the metal folding chair. “Were you interested in this book?”

At either end of the small table was a stack of 6×9 hardbound books, each about an inch thick. The cover was crimson felt, with gold lettering: A Portrait of Zurfina the Magnificent.

“One for each of us,” said Terra. “Three in total.”

“Three?”

“Yess, the third one is for me,” said Esther.

Wissinger stared up at the lizzie, his mouth unflatteringly agape.

“She reads at a post-primary level,” said Iolana, proudly.

“How long did it take to teach her?”

“Twenty-two hours a day, seven days a week, for about six years.”

The writer shook himself and pulled the top book from the stack on his left. In practiced script he wrote, “To my dear Lady Iolana, from one writer to another with great respect, Isaak Wissinger.” In a second volume he wrote, “To my dear lizzie friend Esther, may this book aid in your language acquisition, sincerely Isaak Wissinger.” In the third book he wrote, “My dearest Lady Terra, please enjoy this book, though you should probably skip chapters four through twelve, sincerely Isaak Wissinger.”

“Thank you,” said Iolana, looking over her shoulder at two men and a woman behind them. “We shan’t hold up your queue any longer.”

The Price of Magic – Hertzel and Leoni Hertling

The Price of Magic - NewThe Price of Magic is out now, but we’re still looking at all the character of the book.  Many have appeared in previous books of the series.  While not revealing what’s going on in the new book, we are taking a look at where they’ve come from.  If you haven’t read the previous books in the Senta and the Steel Dragon series, beware Spoiler Alert.

We first met Hertzel and his twin sister Hero in Book 1: The Voyage of the Minotaur.  They quickly become two of Senta’s best friends and play big parts in Book 2: The Dark and Forbidding Land and Book 3: The Drache Girl.  We see a little less of Hertzel in Book 4: The Young Sorceress and Book 5: The Two Dragons, but he’s still around.  He makes a few appearances in Book 6: The Sorceress and her Lovers.  If I ever decide to write some spin off books that tell what’s going on with other characters or fill spaces between books, I’m going to write more about Hertzel.  He’s a great character to play with.  He hasn’t spoken since he was a small child and witnessed the murder of his parents.

In The Price of Magic, we find Hertzel’s found a wife.  Leoni is a nice Zaeri girl from Freedonia, and loves her new husband, and finds him a wonderful listener.

New powers are rising in Birmisia. Far to the south, the strange lizardmen of Xiatooq are making themselves known. Closer to home, the new lizzie city Yessonarah finds itself rich in gold—gold the humans covet. As tensions rise, many in Port Dechantagne seem eager to teach the lizzies a lesson in humility. Fourteen year old Iolana Staff finds herself in the center of it all, as she is pulled between her conscience and the conventions of society. Unconcerned with the conflict between human and lizzie, sorceress Senta Bly prepares for her own war, unaware that events will pull her into a life and death confrontation with an old enemy.

The Price of Magic is the latest in a series that chronicles a world of steam power and rifles, where magic has not yet been forgotten. A new colony in a distant lost world has grown from a tiny outpost to a center of civilization in a vast wilderness. The Price of Magic continues a story of adventure and magic, religion and prejudice, steam engines and dinosaurs, angels and lizardmen, machine guns and wizards, sorceresses, bustles and corsets, steam-powered computers, hot air balloons, and dragons.

Eamon and Dot Shrubb

The Price of Magic - NewThe Price of Magic is available tomorrow, wherever fine ebooks are sold.  We’re looking at the many characters in the book. Most have appeared in previous books. I’m not going to tell you what happens to them in The Price of Magic, but if you haven’t read the earlier Senta books, Spoiler Alert.

Eamon Shrubb first appeared in Book 2: The Dark and Forbidding Land as a foil for Saba Colbshallow.  By Book 3: The Drache Girl, they have become close friends, and Eamon has picked up a wife named Dot.  The secret here is that I wrote book 3 first!

Eamon is a big guy, and a natural for a bobby.  He is friendly and boyish in some ways, but quickly turns no-nonsense when violators are about.  Eamon plays an important part in The Price of Magic too.

Dot is a character based on someone I once new.  She is a vivacious redhead who is also deaf.  Although she can speak, she seldom does because she thinks (or has been told) that her voice sounds funny.  Dot is a great character to have around for the others to interact with.

Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 7: The Price of Magic is available tomorrow for $2.99 wherever fine ebooks are sold.

Saba and Loana Colbshallow

The Price of Magic - NewThe Price of Magic is just a couple days away, so we’re looking at the many characters in the book. Most have appeared in previous books. I’m not going to tell you what happens to them in The Price of Magic, but if you haven’t read the earlier Senta books, Spoiler Alert.

Saba Colbshallow is one of the main characters in the series.  He appears in Book 0: Brechalon and Book 1: The Voyage of the Minotaur, but really comes into his own in Book 2: The Dark and Forbidding Land.  One could make the argument that he actually has the most important part in that book.  He is certainly one of the few characters that gets as much focus as Senta.  In Book 3: The Drache Girl, he meets Loana and by Book 4: The Young Sorceress, they are married.  In book 5: The Two Dragons, we see quite a bit of his married family life.

We don’t see nearly as much of Saba in Book 6: The Sorceress and her Lovers as the previous books, but his importance is there.  We see Saba and Loana twice in The Price of Magic, once together and once each apart.  Still Saba plays an important role.

New Cover for Brechalon

BrechalonBrechalon, Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0 ( a free download) now has a new cover, to match the design aesthetic of the new book in the series– The Price of Magic.

If you haven’t yet downloaded Brechalon, you can get it here in any ebook format.  Thanks and happy reading.

The Price of Magic: Kieran Baxter

The Price of Magic - NewThe Price of Magic is just a couple of weeks away, so it’s time to start looking at the many characters in the book.  Most have appeared in previous books.  I’m not going to tell you what happens to them in The Price of Magic, but if you haven’t read the earlier Senta books, Spoiler Alert.

We first met Kieran Baxter as one of the officers on the H.M.S. Minotaur in Book 1: The Voyage of the Minotaur.  We don’t run in to him again until Book 4: The Young Sorceress, when he is marooned on a deserted island.  We know he’s there for years, because he’s only just been rescued when he meets Senta again at the end of Book 5: The Two Dragons.  In Book 6: The Sorceress and her Lovers, he is one of the aforementioned lovers, traveling around the world with Senta.

Baxter is one of the most important characters in The Price of Magic.  Only one other character is a greater player in this story, and I know what you’re thinking– it’s not Senta.

The Price of Magic : On Its Way

The Price of Magic - NewIt’s two and a half weeks until Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 7: The Price of Magic arrives on ebook.  I am doing the final proofreading, searching out any typos.  I’m kind of surprised that any could have survived this long.  The book has undergone many revision steps with the help of my writers group.

Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 7: The Price of Magic is available now for preorder at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iBooks, and will be available December 4th wherever fine ebooks are sold.

Brechalon Characters: The Magic Wielders

Spoiler Alert
And finally, we have our last characters from Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0: Brechalon.

Madame De La Rosa: Madame De La Rosa is a very old seer. She is an expert in divination, and it is she that Smedley Bassington comes to for information. This is her only appearance in the story.

Amadea Jindra: In Brechalon we meet Amadea Jindra as Madame De La Rosa’s apprentice. She is a major part of the storyline in Book 3: The Drache Girl. I’ll fill in more about her when I get to that book.

Professor Merced Calliere: Calliere is a brilliant scientist and inventor. He is Edison, Westinghouse, and Babbage all rolled intellectually into one, but his attitude is all Tony Stark. He is a happy go lucky academic, who is clearly smitten with Iolanthe, though whether she thinks of him as anything more than another resource remains to be seen.

That’s it for Brechalon. In a day or so, we’ll start looking at the characters from the new book in the series: The Price of Magic.  Some of them are the same.  Some are new.  But as it takes place 17 years after Brechalon, people and things are different.

Brechalon Characters: Flashbacks

Brechalon (New Cover)Spoiler Alert
There are several characters in Senta and the Steel Dragon Book 0: Brechalon that appear entirely or mostly in flashbacks.

Smedley Bassington: Wizard Bassington appears mostly in flashbacks though he appears in the present in one chapter. Bassington is an important character in the series and plays a large part in Books 3 and 5. He is a paramour of Zurfina and he is a government wizard. He is also, as we find out, a great manipulator. I had a very clear image of what Bassington looked like. His appearance is based on Stephen King. I set up my copy of the Dark Tower to the author’s photograph whenever I was writing him. I had been carrying the name Smedley around for a while, and it just seemed to fit. He has his part to play, and plays it. I really enjoyed writing him in Book 3: The Drache Girl. He is a great foil for Senta.

Master Akalos: Master Akalos was the Dechantagne tutor, a cowardly little man, and not very important to the story. He is referenced once or twice, but Brechalon is the only place we see him, and that in a flashback.

Iphegenia Dechantagne: The mother of Terrence, Iolanthe, and Augie is murdered by her husband, as we see in a flashback in Book 0. I don’t think she is ever mentioned again, but she plays an important role nonetheless, in shaping the Dechantagne siblings. I love the name Iphegenia, and have always been fascinated by the myth of Agamemnon’s sacrificing her. I would have used the name somewhere, but it fits here.

Lucius Dechantagne: The father of the Dechantagne’s, he is only spoken of in the later books, having died some time before Brechalon, and having lived without facing real punishment for his wife’s murder, though it does cost him his standing in society and his hereditary title.

Jolon Bendrin: As we find out in book 0 flashbacks, Jolon Bendrin is a rapist. He is mentioned only briefly in book 1, but finally makes a satisfying appearance in the flesh in book 5.

Simon Mudgett: The man who was in bed with Iphegenia Dechantagne when her husband kills her. He is mentioned once more in the series. I pulled Simon out of nowhere, but Mudgett I have been saving for a while. The name comes from Herman Webster Mudgett (aka H. H. Holmes), America’s first serial killer.
