Princess of Amathar – 1,000th Copy Sold

Princess of AmatharThe week I’m celebrating the sale of the 1,000th copy of Princess of Amathar, my first book.    I started writing Princess of Amathar many years ago– about 1986 or 87.  Like everything I was writing back then, I set it aside and didn’t touch it for many years.  After I started teaching, I pulled it out and started in to finish it.  That was about 1996.  It took me a year or so to finish and then a year to edit.  Then I spent several years trying unsuccessfully to get it published.  Then I set it in a drawer.  One day a friend and colleague suggested I publish it myself, and pointed to Lulu as a place I could do so without a large initial investment.  I published it in paperback in 2007.  I sold a copy to everyone I know– about 69 of them.  The following year, I discovered Smashwords.  I published His Robot Girlfriend first, and then Eaglethorpe Buxton and the Elven Princess— both of which were free.  Then I decided to publish Princess of Amathar.  This was early on in the Smashwords story (Princess of Amathar was the 2,287th Smashwords book).  Since then, it has sold moderately well as an ebook.  In many ways, it is my weakest book, and I think I’ve grown as a writer since then, but I still have a fondness for it.  It is after, the book that started my writing career, and it’s a book that I wanted to read.

You can purchase Princess of Amathar as an ebook for $1.99 wherever fine ebooks are sold.

P.S. I’ve also sold my 16,000th book overall this week.  I’m pretty jazzed about that.

Tesla’s Stepdaughters – Chapter 10 Excerpt

Tesla's StepdaughtersThe group dispersed, leaving Penny and Andrews alone.

“So…” she said.

“Yes?”

“We’re supposed to get to know each other.”

“Yes.”

“I really don’t see the point. It’s not like we’re going to find many things in common.”

“You don’t think so?”

“Well, no. You’re a man and I’m a woman, you’re a Science Police agent and I’m a musician.”

“Maybe we have other interests in common.”

“Like what?”

“Do you like hotdogs?”

“I prefer hamburgers.”

He shrugged.

“That’s just it though. We don’t need to have everything in common to get along. Two people can share time together without needing to do the same thing all the time. If I want to sit around all day reading H. Rider Haggard…”

“I love H. Rider Haggard.”

“Really? Which is your favorite?”

“King Solomon’s Mines.”

“That’s a good one. I like She. Well, I guess there was bound to be something we both enjoyed.”

“I suppose,” said Andrews.

“I’m sure we would both enjoy making out.”

“Making out what?”

“Making out… kissing? You do know what kissing is, right?”

“Of course.”

Penny moved close to him and then turned so that she was draped across his lap, looking up at him. “We kissed some the other night, just not on the mouth.” Placing her hand on his cheek, she guided his face to hers. He felt his lips pressed against hers and then they were parted by her tongue.

Andrews suddenly pulled back and looked at her. She stuck out her tongue, revealing a silver ball attached to a stud which pierced the middle of it.

“Oh…” recognition dawned upon him. “That’s what that was the other night.”

Free at Last, Free at Last!

The day before yesterday was my last day of the school year.  Although I start my next set of five post-grad studies on Monday, as of right now, I am a professional writer for the summer.  Now I can actually spend some real time writing.

This year wasn’t a bad year, but I’m a lot older than I was when I started.  Finishing up the year really took a lot out of me.  It took me 11 days to write chapter fourteen of The Price of Magic, and it was a long chapter.  But I’ve been working on Chapter 15 for 11 days, and I’m just now getting close to the end.  Hopefully, now I’ll be able to knock out the rest of the book quickly.

The Price of MagicAs I write this, I just finished chapter 14 in the draft of The Price of Magic.  It took me 14 days to complete which is more than most chapters have.  This is for several reasons: 1) It’s a long chapter.  Chapter 13 was short.  This one is much longer than the others.  2) It was an important chapter.  The words had to be just right, not the least of which because a major character dies.  3) I’m trying to tie up the school year and that’s taking a lot of my time.  As I write this, I’ve still got 7 days of school left.  I’m also on the leadership team, the academic vocabulary team, and the multicultural team.  Lots of meetings.  I’m also still taking post-grad classes.  This week finishes up the third.  Next week, the final three start– all at once!  I may finish this book.  If I don’t, it will be because I’ve died.  Watch here for more details either way.

Writing Speed

The Price of MagicWonder how long it takes to write a novel?  I’m hard at work on The Price of Magic.  Here’s how its been going so far.  Bear in mind that I’m working full time and taking 18 credits of college classes at the same time.

Tesla’s Stepdaughters – Chapter 5 Excerpt

Tesla's StepdaughtersThe lobby of the Grace Coolidge international building, though Spartan, was large and it took a minute for Andrews to find his appointment waiting by feet of the statue of Justice. He almost didn’t recognize Ep!phanee. She was dressed in faded jeans and a Nehi Blue Cream Soda tee shirt. Her hair was tucked up under a black military cap.

“Is somebody here with you?” he asked.

“Nope. I ditched the cops back at the hotel. Buy me a hotdog.”

“You shouldn’t be running around town without an escort.”

“Well I have one now. Besides, I just want a hotdog. There’s a hotdog cart just down on the corner. I saw it on the cab ride over here.”

She took him by the arm and led him to the glass enclosed front of the building, holding the door open for him. The hotdog vendor was stationed just where she had described, a chubby little woman with a striped shirt, a large stain covering most of the front.

“Two dogs,” Ep!phanee ordered, then turned to Andrews. “What do you want on yours?”

“I don’t know; whatever’s customary.”

“Haven’t you ever had a hotdog before?”

He shook his head. “German food’s not very popular in the enclaves.”

“Hotdogs are as American as apple pie. Alright. Bacon, beans, avocado, catsup, and mayonnaise. Do you want jalapenos?”

“Yes please.”

“So you don’t have street food in the enclaves?”

“Sure. Tacos– usually fish tacos, but sometimes grilled shrimp.”

The vendor handed her the hotdogs already loaded with beans and avocado. Stepping to the end of the cart, she scooped on the jalapenos and then squirted on squiggly lines of red catsup and white mayonnaise. Handing one of the dogs to Andrews, she watched as he took a tentative bite. She then opened her mouth wide and shoved in about a third of hers.

“Good huh?” she asked, her mouth full.

He nodded and then took another bite. Ep!phanee began strolling down the sidewalk and even though she was moving slowly Andrews had to take a few quick steps to keep up. He was still eating his hotdog as they walked, being careful not to spill the condiments on his jacket. She finished first and dropped the little paper hotdog caddie in a trashcan beside the street.

“I should get you back to the hotel.”

“I’m staying in this hotel now.”

Andrews looked skyward to find that they were in front of the Palmer House. When he looked back down, Ep!phanee was already going through the revolving door. He stuffed the last bit of hotdog into his mouth and dropped the paper waste in a can beside the door, following her. The lobby was huge, with a tiled vaulted ceiling that looked like it belonged in a cathedral. Andrews felt self-conscious even walking on the rugs.

“Why are you staying here now?”

“We have two more days in Chicago. I’ll go crazy if I’m cooped up with the girls the whole time.”

“You have two entire suites at the American. And it’s under complete police protection.”

“I’ve got my own suite here.” She twirled around a few times but kept on course for the elevator. “It’s the same one Ulysses S. Grant stayed in. He used to be on money, you know.”

She skipped into the elevator and he followed. An attendant, a small woman in a tight red uniform, was waiting inside.

“Twenty fifth floor,” said Ep!phanee.

The attendant nodded, and then turned the lever sending the car gliding swiftly upwards.

“Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885,” said Andrews. “There weren’t any twenty five story buildings in Chicago then.”

“I think I feel his presence though.”

Tesla’s Stepdaughters – Ruth De Molay

Ruth De MolayRuth is one of the four musician characters in Tesla’s Stepdaughters. What was her inspiration?

In as far as the Ladybugs is an alternate world analogy of the Beatles…
Ruth is Ringo. She’s the drummer. She’s written one really famous song, although she sings some written by her bandmates. Everyone thinks she’s nice.

Ruth is a native of the Virgin Islands.

Read about her and the other Ladybugs in Tesla’s Stepdaughters.

Coming Soon: The Price of Magic

Book 7 of Senta and the Steel Dragon is on the way (this is actually the eighth book, since there is a book 0).  I’ve been working on the draft for the last 48 days and am halfway through.  If all goes well, it should be ready by September 1st, if not earlier.  And here is the cover.  For those of you who’ve read the series, this should be a pretty big reveal!
